What Is An Angle Stop?

An Angle Stop is a small shutoff valve that controls water flow from a supply pipe to a fixture. It usually sits where the pipe leaves the wall and turns toward a toilet, sink, or other fixture. Closing the valve stops water at that fixture without shutting off the whole building.

Key Takeaways About Angle Stop

  • The valve changes direction from the wall pipe to the fixture supply line.
  • Closing it isolates one fixture during repairs or leaks.
  • An Angle Stop is not the same as a whole-house shutoff valve.

How Angle Stop Works

Angle Stop controls the supply line between a building pipe and a fixture. Its body turns the water path, often from a wall connection toward a toilet tank or faucet. The handle opens or closes an internal passage.

A closed valve blocks water before it reaches the fixture. A plumber may close it before replacing a supply line, fill valve, or toilet. The connection may use a compression fitting, threaded connection, or another approved attachment method. The valve must match the pipe and supply line so the joint stays secure.

Expert Note

When we inspect an Angle Stop, we check the valve body, handle, supply connection, and nearby pipe. We also test whether the valve closes fully without forcing it. On toilet repairs, we look for corrosion or a slow leak that could affect the new part.

Angle Stop in Practice: A Real-World Example

A toilet keeps running, so the water supply needs to be isolated before the fill valve is replaced. The Angle Stop under the toilet closes the local supply, while other fixtures can still receive water.
