What Is a Lateral Sewer?

Lateral Sewer is a private underground pipe that carries wastewater from a building's plumbing to a public sewer main or shared connection. The pipe usually runs beneath the property and connects to the larger sewer network. A lateral sewer may include the section from the home to the property line or street.

  • Its path may cross a yard, driveway, or street.
  • A lateral sewer is not the same as a sewer main.

How Lateral Sewer Works

Lateral Sewer carries wastewater from toilets, sinks, and other drains toward a public sewer main. The pipe normally slopes so wastewater flows by gravity. A cleanout can provide access for inspection and clearing.

The lateral sewer may run under landscaping, pavement, or a driveway. Its condition can change along the route, so a Sewer Camera Inspection helps show cracks, root growth, offsets, or collapsed sections. A replacement project removes the damaged section and installs a new pipe with a sound connection to the existing system.

Expert Note

When we assess a lateral sewer, we trace the pipe from the building toward the connection point. We check camera findings, cleanout access, pipe alignment, and the location of damaged sections before planning sewer line replacement.

Lateral Sewer in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home may have a lateral sewer running from its foundation beneath the yard to the street connection. If roots have entered the pipe and caused repeated blockages, sewer line replacement may address the affected route.
