What Is a Water Heater Element?

A Water Heater Element is an electric heating component inside a tank-style water heater. It transfers heat into the stored water when electricity passes through its metal casing. Most electric water heaters have an upper element, a lower element, or both. Gas water heaters do not use this component.

Key Takeaways About Water Heater Element

  • It works only in electric tank water heaters.
  • Mineral buildup can reduce heating performance.
  • A thermostat controls the element, not the heating element itself.

How Water Heater Element Works

A Water Heater Element warms water through electrical resistance. Electricity passes through a metal part inside the tank, and the part produces heat. The thermostat senses water temperature and controls when the element turns on.

Many electric tanks use an upper and lower element. The upper element heats water near the top, while the lower element heats water through the lower part of the tank. Mineral deposits can coat the element and slow heat transfer. A failed element may leave water lukewarm or cold, even when the tank has power.

How the Element Is Checked

  • A plumber checks the electrical supply and thermostat operation.
  • The element can be tested for continuity and signs of damage.
  • The tank connection is checked for leaks before replacement.

Expert Note

When we inspect a water heater element, we check the power supply, thermostat operation, and element condition together. Our team also looks for leaks around the element opening and signs of mineral buildup. These checks help separate an element problem from a control or wiring problem.

Water Heater Element in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner reports cold water from an electric tank water heater. During Water Heater Repair, the plumber checks the power and controls, then tests the element for damage before recommending the proper repair.
